In November 1818, Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh seized the city from him and placed it in the charge of Jah&#257&#7749d&#257d Kh&#257n, another of the B&#257rakza&#299 brothers, but no sooner did Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh return to Lahore than Y&#257r Muhammad Kh&#257n emerged from his hiding, expelled Jah&#257&#7749d&#257d Kh&#257n and resumed control of Pesh&#257war. In June 1822, Y&#257r Muhammad Kh&#257n agreed to become a tributary of Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh but soon thereafter Muhammad Az&#299m Kh&#257n, the K&#257bul Waz&#299r, expelled him from Pesh&#257war. Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh defeated the K&#257bul Waz&#299r in the battle of Naushehr&#257 on 14 March 1823, and installed Y&#257r Muhammad Kh&#257n, governor of Pesh&#257war. Shortly afterwards, Sayyid Ahmad Barelav&#299 proclaimed a holy war against the Sikhs, Y&#257r Muhammad Kh&#257n joining hands with him. A battle was fought between the Gh&#257z&#299s and the Sikhs on 21 December 1826, at Ako&#7771&#257, 18 km from Attock, across the River Indus. The Gh&#257z&#299s were repulsed and Pesh&#257war was reoccupied. Y&#257r Muhammad was pardoned and restored to his old position. Sayyid Ahmad again attacked Pesh&#257war in 1829 and Y&#257r Muhammad was killed in action.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Cunningham, Joseph Davey, A History of the Sikhs.
