He had his early education at the village gurdw&#257r&#257 where he learnt to read the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib and recite k&#299rtan. The massacre of reformist Sikhs in the shrine at Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib on 20 February 1921 proved a turning point in his life. He received the rites of Kh&#257ls&#257 initiation at the Ak&#257l Takht at Amritsar and plunged into the Ak&#257l&#299 movement for the reform of Sikh shrines. In 1922, he was jailed for participating in the Gur&#363 k&#257 B&#257gh morch&#257 and in 1923 for taking part in the Jaito campaign. It was he who led the Pañj Pi&#257re who hoisted the Nish&#257n S&#257hib or Sikh flag at Gurdw&#257r&#257 &#7788ibb&#299 S&#257hib at Jaito at the end of the morch&#257. A sirop&#257 or robe of honour was bestowed upon him, at the Ak&#257l Takht, Amritsar. Assuming the appellation of Sant Sip&#257h&#299, Sant Vis&#257kh&#257 Si&#7749gh now took to the preaching of Gur&#363 N&#257nak&#8217s word and in 1944 established to this end a centre called Gurmat Prach&#257rak Si&#7749gh Sabh&#257 at K&#299shanpur&#257 Kal&#257&#7749, in F&#299rozpur district, with branches in several other villages. He also formed Gur&#363 N&#257nak Dev Education Society at Janet, in F&#299rozpur,and opened schools in rural and backward areas. Besides the M&#257lv&#257 Itih&#257s, a 3 volume work, covering various aspects of Sikh history, especially relevant to the M&#257lv&#257 region, Sant Vis&#257kh&#257 Si&#7749gh published a series of tracts bearing on Sikh theology and religion.

        Sant Vis&#257kh&#257 Si&#7749gh died on 15 August 1968 at Kishanpur&#257.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Vis&#257kh&#257 Si&#7749gh, Sant, M&#257lv&#257 ltih&#257s.Kishanpura,1954

Gi&#257n&#299 Balwant Si&#7749gh
