He attended the village school in the neighbouring Ga&#7771h to which he and his mother had shifted after the death of his father. He started life as a village shopkeeper. He took the vows of the Kh&#257ls&#257 and observed them faithfully. When the Gurdw&#257r&#257 Reform movement gathered momentum in 1920, Bh&#257&#299 Vary&#257m Si&#7749gh went to Sheikh&#363pur&#257 and then to Gurdw&#257r&#257 Khar&#257 Saud&#257, Ch&#363ha&#7771k&#257&#7751&#257, where he joined the jath&#257 of Bh&#257&#299 Kart&#257r Si&#7749gh Jhabbar, and served in Gur&#363 k&#257 La&#7749gar for some time. Jathed&#257r Jhabbar then sent him to Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib where he, disguised as an Ud&#257s&#299 s&#257dhu, gathered intelligence about Mahant Narai&#7751 D&#257s' moves and reported it to the local Ak&#257l&#299 leaders such as Bh&#257&#299 Uttam Si&#7749gh, Bh&#257&#299 Dal&#299p Si&#7749gh and Chaudhar&#299 P&#257l Si&#7749gh. On the morning of 20 February l921, when they heard the firing upon Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh's jath&#257 in Gurdw&#257r&#257 J&#257nam Asth&#257n and Bh&#257&#299 Dal&#299p Si&#7749gh ran towards the Gurdw&#257r&#257 in order to plead with the Mahant to stop the firing, Bh&#257&#299 Vary&#257m Si&#7749gh also accompanied him. While Bh&#257&#299 Dal&#299p Si&#7749gh was shot at by the Mahant himself, Bh&#257&#299 Vary&#257m Si&#7749gh was struck down by one of his hired killers.
