He was the only son of his parents. He never married. He was illiterate, and had strong religious inclinations. At the age of 40, he took the vows of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 at the hands of Sant Gi&#257n&#299 Sundar Si&#7749gh Bhi&#7751&#7693r&#257&#7749v&#257le. He joined, the <i>shah&#299d&#299 jath&#257</i> (band of volunteers vowed to do-or-die) of Ak&#257l&#299 volunteers marching to Jaito. Reaching Jaito on the morning of 21 February 1924, the <i>jath&#257</i> was subjected to rifle and machinegun fire. A bullet hit Vadh&#257v&#257 Si&#7749gh in the chest and he died almost instantaneously.
