He learnt Gurmukh&#299 at the village <i>gurdw&#257r&#257</i> and was able fluently to recite passages from the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib and stories of the Sikh martyrs. Uj&#257gar Si&#7749gh grew up into a handsome youth, strong of limb and fair-complexioned. Losing his three wedded wives successively, he lost interest in worldly affairs and turned to religious pursuit instead. He participated in the liberation of Sr&#299 Darb&#257r S&#257hib, Tarn T&#257ran, and in that of Gurdw&#257r&#257 Bh&#257&#299 Jog&#257 Si&#7749gh at Pesh&#257war.
