Receiving the vows of <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 discipline at the hands of Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh, he chose to stay with him at Amritsar to defend the Harimandar against the onslaughts of the Mu<u>gh</u>als and Af<u>gh</u>&#257ns. Thar&#257j Si&#7749gh attended on Naw&#257b Kap&#363r Si&#7749gh as his bodyguard and obtained from him a command of 100 soldiers. He fought in the battle of Sirhind (1764) at which he is said to have cut off the head of the <i>faujd&#257r</i>, Zain <u>Kh</u>&#257n.
