The family later migrated to Chakk No. 10 Thoth&#299&#257&#7749 in Shei<u>kh</u>&#363pur&#257 district (now in Pakistan). In the village, he had learnt enough Gurmukh&#299 to be able to read the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib. He had also received the vows of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257. He also served the army for a brief period. He was among those from his village who had volunteered to take part in the liberation of <i>gurdw&#257r&#257s</i> in Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib.
