A Khatr&#299 of the Bhall&#257 clan, Tej Bh&#257n was born to B&#257b&#257 Harij&#299 and M&#257t&#257 Mil&#257v&#299 of B&#257sarke Gill&#257&#7749, a village 12 km southwest of Amritsar. He was married at the age of 12 to Ba<u>kh</u>t Kaur (also known as Lachhm&#299, Lakhm&#299 or simply Lakkho) from a Duggal Khatr&#299 family. Gur&#363 Amar D&#257s, born on 5 May 1479, was the eldest of their four sons, the other three being &#298shar D&#257s, Khem R&#257i and M&#257nak Chand. The family lived partly by agriculture and partly by trade.
