He was born into a Sar&#257o Ja&#7789&#7789 family of Lehal Kal&#257&#7749 in Sa&#7749gr&#363r district. He was a descendant of B&#257b&#257 Ark who had been blessed by Gur&#363 Te<u>gh</u> Bah&#257dur himself. One of his ancestors, Bh&#257&#299 Mall Si&#7749gh, was the founder-Mahant of Dhamt&#257n S&#257hib also known as the Deo&#7771i (gateway) of Haz&#363r S&#257hib, N&#257nde&#7693. His brother, Bh&#257&#299 Mev&#257 Si&#7749gh, was the keeper of the shrine, commemorating the visit of Gur&#363 Te<u>gh</u> Bah&#257dur to Lehal Kal&#257&#7749 and the <i>sam&#257dh&#299</i> of B&#257b&#257 Ark, adjoining the shrine. Tap&#299y&#257 Si&#7749gh had been a leading Sikh of the B&#257&#7749gar country. In the forties he received from the Sikh Samprad&#257ya the historical title of Mahant which had been denied to him by the rulers of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 state.
