He lived up to the time of Gur&#363 Hargobind when he earned a name for himself as a soldier participating in the encounters with the Mu<u>gh</u>al troops. "Once", as says Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh, <i>Sikh&#257&#7749 d&#299 Bhagat M&#257l&#257</i>, "Bh&#257&#299 Ta<u>kh</u>t&#363, accompanied by Bh&#257&#299 Darg&#257h Tul&#299, Bh&#257&#299 Mans&#257dh&#257r, and Bh&#257&#299 T&#299rath Uppal, waited on Gur&#363 Hargobind and said, "Venerable True King ! We listen to discourses given by enlightened Sikhs and they do afford us mental peace, but when Bh&#257&#299 Nival&#257 or Bh&#257&#299 Nih&#257l&#257 expound the sacred word, it is a different experience altogether. We feel spiritually elated. Whence comes the difference, Master?" Gur&#363 Hargobind said, "The Sacred Word is the fount of eternal bliss. But preachers vary as do the listeners." According to the <i>Sikh&#257&#7749 d&#299 Bhagat M&#257l&#257</i>, the Gur&#363 then enumerated fourteen qualities each of a good preacher and of a good listener.
