To intensify the Ak&#257l&#299 campaign at Jaito, the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee sent out from Amritsar in February 1924, a Shah&#299d&#299 Jath&#257 or martyrs' column, consisting of 500 volunteers ready to lay down their lives to have the interrupted akha&#7751&#7693 p&#257th recommenced at Gurdw&#257r&#257 Ga&#7749gsar at Jaito, in N&#257bh&#257 state territory. The march of the Sikhs through the M&#257jh&#257 and M&#257lv&#257 districts of the Punjab generated a great deal of enthusiasm among the people. Bh&#257&#299 Sundar Si&#7749gh and several others from his village joined the column on 21 Feburary 1924 during the last lap of its journey. As it reached near Gurdw&#257r&#257 Ga&#7749gsar, Jaito, a strong posse of police and army blocked its way and subjected it to rifle and machinegun firing. Bh&#257&#299 Sundar Si&#7749gh was hit in the stomach and lay grievously wounded. The N&#257bh&#257 state police removed him to prisoners' camp where he succumbed to his injury.

Gurcharan Si&#7749gh Gi&#257n&#299
