In 1830 Sult&#257n Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n became governor of Pesh&#257war and a tributary of the Sikhs. About this time, he was forced to surrender the famous horse Lail&#299 to Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh. In May 1834, Sult&#257n Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n was replaced in Pesh&#257war by Har&#299 Si&#7749gh Nalv&#257 and granted a handsome <i>j&#257g&#299r</i>. When in 1835, Dost Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n declared a holy war on the Sikhs to recover Pesh&#257war, he won over his brother Sult&#257n Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n to his side. However, Sult&#257n Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n placed no faith in Dost Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n and defected to Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh's camp. When the British government decided to bring Afghanistan under their influence and planned with the help of Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh to replace Dost Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n by Sh&#257h Shuj&#257, Sult&#257n Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n supported the Sikhs. Sult&#257n Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n was a staunch follower of the &#7692ogr&#257 brothers.
