According to his own evidence, he was born at Kapilnagar and educated at V&#257r&#257&#7751as&#299. He had been at the courts of several chieftains and officials, Hindu and Muslim, before joining Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh at P&#257o&#7751&#7789&#257 in 1687. He presented his <i>Chhand Vich&#257r Pi&#7749gal</i>, a treatise on prosody, to the Gur&#363 who rewarded him handsomely for it. He completed <i>Adhy&#257tam Prak&#257sh</i>, a work on Ved&#257nta philosophy, much read and revered by Nirmal&#257 scholars to this day, on Ass&#363 <i>sud&#299</i> 11,1755 Bk/6 September 1698 according to its colophon. A manuscript of <i>Adhy&#257tam Prak&#257sh</i> is preserved in the Central Public Library at Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257, and that of <i>Chhand Vich&#257r Pi&#7749gal</i> in the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 College Library at Amritsar.
