He laboured with devotion during the digging of the sacred pool at Amritsar. One day, as Gur&#363 Arjan was supervising the work, a mendicant came to him for alms. The Gur&#363 did not have at that moment a coin to offer and asked if any of the Sikhs would give him one. Bh&#257&#299 Som&#257 possessed only two pice which he offered to the Gur&#363, who gave them to the mendicant. "Bh&#257&#299 Som&#257 is now my <i>sh&#257h</i>, or creditor," remarked the Gur&#363. From that day Bh&#257&#299 Som&#257 came to be known as Som&#257 Sh&#257h. Later, he became rich through business. His descendants were living until recent years in the district of S&#257h&#299v&#257l, &#7692er&#257 Ism&#257'&#299l <u>Kh</u>&#257n and Bann&#363, in West Punjab and North West Frontier Province.
