The family later shifted to Vano&#7789&#299&#257&#7749v&#257l&#299 in the newly formed Shei<u>kh</u>&#363pur&#257 district. Sohan Si&#7749gh received the vows of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 in 1914 at Sr&#299 Ak&#257l Ta<u>kh</u>t S&#257hib, Amritsar. Rejoined the Indian army but soon got his discharge. Once on a visit to Gurdw&#257r&#257 Khar&#257 Saud&#257, Ch&#363hark&#257&#7751&#257, he learnt about the corruption prevalent in the holy places under the control of <i>mahants</i> or hereditary custodians. He made up his mind to join the ranks of the reformists. He had himself registered as an Ak&#257l&#299 volunteer.
