<p class="C1">&#65279SOHAN L&#256L (d. 1888), son of Chhajj&#363, the goldsmith, of Charkh&#299 D&#257dr&#299 in the princely state of J&#299nd, was the steward of the estates of &#7788h&#257kur Si&#7749gh Sandh&#257&#7749v&#257l&#299&#257's mother-in-law, R&#257&#7751&#299 Kishan Kaur of Ballabga&#7771h. &#7788h&#257kur Si&#7749gh, who had set up an <i>emigre</i> government in Pondicherry in behalf of the deposed Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Duleep Si&#7749gh, utilized Sohan L&#257l's services to have secret letters delivered to men of influence such as R&#257j&#257 Narendra Bah&#257dur, the Peshk&#257r to the Niz&#257m of Hyder&#257b&#257d, the R&#257j&#257s of N&#257bh&#257, Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257, J&#299nd and Far&#299dko&#7789 seeking their help. Sohan Lal kept circulating stories about the arrival of foreign troops --Russian, Turk and Af<u>gh</u>&#257n-- to have Duleep Si&#7749gh installed as Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 of the Punjab. In September 1887, Sohan L&#257l was arrested by the British. He died in March 1888 while still under detention.</p>
