He was the son of Prem Si&#7749gh, of the village of &#7788he&#7789har, near Lahore, and brother of Lakkh&#257 Si&#7749gh along with whom he entered the service of Sukkarchakk&#299&#257s. Sham&#299r Si&#7749gh fought in the battle of Ras&#363lnagar in 1778-79 under Mah&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh, who had joined hands with Jai Si&#7749gh, of the Kanhaiy&#257 <i>misl</i>, against P&#299r Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n Cha&#7789&#7789h&#257. To recover the famous cannon Zamzam&#257, which the Bha&#7749g&#299 chief Jha&#7751&#7693&#257 Si&#7749gh had left with P&#299r Muhammad <u>Kh</u>&#257n, the Sikh chiefs attacked Ras&#363lnagar. It is claimed that Sham&#299r Si&#7749gh killed the Cha&#7789&#7789h&#257 chief with a musket-shot during the siege. Sham&#299r Si&#7749gh built the Fort of Gobindga&#7771h at Amritsar at Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh's order and became its first <i>qil&#257d&#257r</i> (commandant). He served in the expedition of Kas&#363r (1807). In 1819, the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 appointed him the <i>th&#257ned&#257r</i> of N&#363rpur. He held a <i>j&#257g&#299r</i> in Gujr&#257&#7749w&#257l&#257.
