He attended the village primary school and also learnt <i>la&#7751&#7693e</i> or the Mah&#257jani script traditionally used by businessmen. He received the rites of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 at Sr&#299 Ak&#257l Ta<u>kh</u>t S&#257hib, Amritsar. He enlisted in the army and served with 23rd Cavalry. There he learnt some English and was soon promoted a <i>daf&#257d&#257r</i> (cavalry sergeant). During the Great War (1914-18) while his regiment went for field service abroad, Sev&#257 Si&#7749gh remained behind as a clerk in the depot and was subsequently promoted head clerk. After the war, when he came home on three months' furlough, he heard about Gurdw&#257r&#257 Rik&#257bgañj agitation. He applied for his discharge from the army, but his request was turned down. He nevertheless quit on medical grounds, and became an activist in the Ak&#257l&#299 movement. He participated in the liberation of Gurdw&#257r&#257 Khar&#257 Saud&#257, Ch&#363ha&#7771k&#257&#7751&#257, and also registered himself as a volunteer for the liberation of <i>gurdw&#257r&#257s</i> at Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib.
