His father Bh&#257&#299 Mohr&#257 however had become through thrift and hard work a small shopkeeper and money-lender. Sant&#257 Si&#7749gh learnt Gurmukh&#299 from the village <i>granth&#299</i>, Bh&#257&#299 &#7788ek Si&#7749gh, and could read the Holy Book fluently. He was initiated a Si&#7749gh at the age of 17. He commanded respect for his upright conduct, religious devotion and tuneful recital of the heroic deeds of Sikh martyrs. As the movement for Gurdw&#257r&#257 Reform got under way, he joined the Ak&#257l&#299 ranks.
