He was an ambitious ruler and began extending his influence over the neighbouring hill states as well as over the plains lying at the foot of the &#346iv&#257lik ranges. He came as far as Hoshi&#257rpur in the Punjab where he built the famous fort of Bajv&#257&#7771&#257. Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh however drove him away from the plains in 1804. In 1805, the Nepalese general, Amar Si&#7749gh Th&#257p&#257, crossed the Yamun&#257 at the invitation of R&#257j&#257 of Sirm&#363r to suppress a rebellion of his subjects, but went on and laid siege to the Fort of K&#257&#7749g&#7771&#257. Sa&#7749s&#257r Chand resisted the Gurkh&#257s for four long years. When he could fight no more, he solicited the help of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh. The Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 marched an army to K&#257&#7749g&#7771&#257 and defeated the Nepalese, but he seized the Fort, accepting Sa&#7749s&#257r Chand as a tributary of his government.

Sa&#7749s&#257r Chand died in December 1823.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

S&#363r&#299, Sohan L&#257l, 'Umd&#257t ut-Tw&#257r&#299kh.
