The family later settled in Chakk No. 71 Ba&#7751&#7693&#257l&#257 Bachan Si&#7749ghv&#257l&#257 in Lyallpur district. Samm&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh learnt to read Gurmukh&#299 at the village <i>gurdw&#257r&#257</i> where he was also admitted to the vows of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 Panth.</p> <p class="C1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He served in the 92nd Battalion during the Great War (1914-18) for about four years. After his release from the army, he joined the campaign for the reform of shrine management. He and his elder brother, Pr&#299tam Si&#7749gh registered themselves as Ak&#257l&#299 volunteers. When the call for action came on 19 February 1921, Pr&#299tam Si&#7749gh was away visiting some relation, but the youngest of the seven brothers, B&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh, offered to take his place. Both Samm&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh and B&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh joined the <i>jath&#257</i> of Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh and fell martyrs in the compound of Gurdw&#257r&#257 Janam Asth&#257n on the morning of 20 February 1921.
