The extant manuscripts of the work are all undated, but the surmise is that these were written around the middle of the eighteenth century when Bh&#257&#299 A&#7693&#7693a&#7751 Sh&#257h was putting up at Mu&#7751&#7693e Shar&#299h in Lahore addressing sa&#7749gats and preaching the Sikh way of life. The manuscripts are also silent about their authorship, but tradition attributes them to Bh&#257&#299 Sahaj R&#257m, a disciple of A&#7692&#7692a&#7751 Sh&#257h, and himself a renowed Sev&#257panth&#299 saint. The work was first published in 1886 at Matb&#257 Gulshan Punjab, R&#257walpi&#7751&#7693&#299, and reprinted in 1958 by the Sev&#257panth&#299--A&#7693&#7693a&#7751 Sh&#257h&#299 Sabh&#257, Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257. Another edition of the book was brought out in 1973 by Lahore Book Shop, Ludhi&#257&#7751&#257, under the title S&#257kh&#299&#257&#7749 A&#7693&#7693a&#7751 Sh&#257h ate Bachan Mah&#257&#7749purkh&#257&#7749 De. The work comprises a total of 83 s&#257kh&#299s homiletic in style. The emphasis in all the s&#257kh&#299s is on the virtues of remembrance of the Divine name and humble and selfless service of fellow men. Written in simple prose the book seems directed to the layman to enable him to understand the basic principles of Sikhism.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Gurmukh Si&#7749gh, Sev&#257panth&#299&#257&#7749 d&#299 Pañjabi S&#257hit n&#363&#7749 De&#7751.
