At the time of his father's death in 1836, he was serving under R&#257j&#257 Suchet Si&#7749gh &#7692ogr&#257. He participated in many of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh's campaigns of conquest. He was present when Mult&#257n was conquered in 1818 and also joined the expedition to Kashm&#299r the following year.
