His identity is not clearly established. While Gurbil&#257s Chhev&#299&#7749 P&#257tsh&#257h&#299 (1718) identifies him as Bh&#257&#299 S&#257dh&#363 who married in 1629 B&#299b&#299 V&#299ro, daughter of Gur&#363 Hargobind, Sar&#363p D&#257s Bhall&#257, Mahim&#257 Prak&#257sh, part II, describes him as a young poet who came to Gur&#363 Arjan with Chhajj&#363 Bhagat, Sh&#257h Hussain and a Bair&#257g&#299 in 1603-04 with the hope of having their compositions included in the scripture being compiled by the Gur&#363. The Gur&#363 addressed him as S&#257dh&#363 Jan and this is how he came to be known. Whatever the case, s&#257dh&#363 Jan was a prolific poet, with a good knowledge of musicology. His verses in chaste Punjabi as well as in Hindi and Sadhuka&#7771&#299 are in several prosodic forms and in over 30 different musical measures. Some of his poems bear titles similar to those of Sikh texts such as Japu, Sukhman&#299, B&#257van Akhar&#299, V&#257r and Salok. Other known titles are S&#257kh&#299&#257&#7749 (136) and Jh&#363lane (6).
