In preparing Ratan D&#257m, the poet consulted works other than Amar Kosh as well. The manuscript which has so far remained unpublished comprises twenty eight chapters. The only extant copy (No. 2421) is preserved in the Central State Library, Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257. It consists of 268 folios and is inscribed in Gurmukh&#299 characters in the hand of one Pañj&#257b Si&#7749gh. The copy was completed in H&#257&#7771 1914 Bk/June-July 1857. The work begins with an explanation of the title (ratan = diamond; d&#257m = string, a necklace) and contains more than 1,400 entries on a wide variety of themes including day, night, year, conscience, history, eras, &#347astras, four var&#7751as, medicines and vegetation. Several entries from the original work have been dropped and several new titles introduced. There are also entries such as the one on n&#257ik (hero) and n&#257ik&#257 (heroine) (548-68) which transcend the strict lexicographical framework and go into many historical details.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Padam, P&#299ar&#257 Si&#7749gh, Sr&#299 Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh j&#299 de Darb&#257r&#299 Ratan.
