When he grew up, he rode in the chief's troops. He considered Mah&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh, son of Cha&#7771hat Si&#7749gh, his <i>putrel&#257</i> (godson), whom he had initiated into the Sikh faith. Mah&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh during his short life, treated R&#257m Si&#7749gh with great respect and gave him large <i>j&#257g&#299rs</i>. R&#299m Si&#7749gh was a fine soldier, and along with his four sons served in Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh's campaigns of Mult&#257n, Kashm&#299r, Manker&#257, Pesh&#257war and Bannu.
