After the death of his father, he ascended the throne of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 on 6 January 1877. During his regency the Sirhind canal was completed, and a broadguage Railway line from R&#257jpur&#257 to Ba&#7789hi&#7751&#7693&#257 was constructed (completed in 1889). The Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 state helped the British with a force, 1,100 strong, during the Af<u>gh</u>&#257n war of 1879.</p> <p class="C1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 R&#257jinder Si&#7749gh took a keen interest in the promotion of sports, especially polo and cricket.
