R&#257m R&#257i died on 4 September 1687. Pañj&#257b Kaur believed that her husband had not died a natural death and that he had only been in <i>sam&#257dh&#299</i> or trance when he was malevolently cremated by his <i>masands</i> or ministers disregarding her protest and entreaties. She sent a letter to Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh, then at P&#257o&#7751&#7789&#257, not far from Dehr&#257 D&#363n, reiterating her complaint. Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh visited Dehr&#257 Dun to chastise the <i>masands</i> against whom cavil had been raised and to install Pañj&#257b Kaur as successor to her husband's <i>gadd&#299</i>, i.e. seat or office.
