He fought for Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Sher Si&#7749gh during the siege of Lahore in January 1841. Under Sher Si&#7749gh's successor, Nih&#257l Si&#7749gh was sent in command of 1,000 horse to administer the area of Dhann&#299 which was in a state of insurrection. He shot the leader of the insurgents dead and by his vigour and severity soon reduced the country to submission. After R&#257j&#257 H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh's death, Nih&#257l Si&#7749gh was sent to Sh&#257hpur district to keep the tribes of the <i>b&#257r</i> in order and in 1847, after the first Anglo-Sikh war, he was made an <i>ad&#257lat&#299</i> or judge. A few months later he was transferred to Jalandhar in the same capacity. After the annexation of the Punjab by the British, Nih&#257l Si&#7749gh was assigned to civil duties.
