He had studied up to the sixth class and was engaged in farming. As the Gurdw&#257r&#257 Reform movement got underway in the early 1920's, he took the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 <i>p&#257hul</i> and became an Ak&#257l&#299 activist. For a time he was secretary of the Ak&#257l&#299 Jath&#257 of Mog&#257 <i>tahs&#299l</i>. When the first <i>shah&#299d&#299 jath&#257</i>, column of volunteers for martyrdom, was passing through Mog&#257 on its way to Jaito, Nath&#257 Si&#7749gh accompanied it.
