Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh visited this D&#257d&#363 Dv&#257r&#257 in the course of his travels through R&#257jasth&#257n in 1706. He was received by Mahant Jait R&#257m, then head of the cloister. The Gur&#363 saluted the sam&#257dh of D&#257d&#363 with his arrow to which the Sikhs took exception. They said that this was contrary to his own teaching which forbade the Sikhs to bow before idols, graves and sam&#257dhs. The Gur&#363 explained that he had done it intentionally in order to test whether his Sikhs were vigilant enough to ensure strict observance of Sikh rules of conduct by all, high and low. The Sikhs imposed a fine on the Gur&#363 for this breach of religious discipline which the Gur&#363 readily paid. A platform called Tha&#7771&#257 S&#257hib was later constructed around the group of three banyan trees consecrated by the Gur&#363's brief sojourn under them. It is a marble-topped stone structure just outside the entrance to the D&#257d&#363panth&#299 temple.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Gi&#257n Si&#7749gh, Gi&#257n&#299, Tw&#257r&#299kh Gurdu&#257ri&#257&#7749.
