He came of a mercantile Aggarval family and became known as a highly capable administrator and a brave general. He acquired proficiency in classical languages ---Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian, and served in a civil capacity under B&#257b&#257 &#256l&#257 Si&#7749gh, founder of the Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 dynasty. It was at the court of his successor, Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Amar Si&#7749gh, (1748-82), that N&#257n&#363 Mall rose to be the D&#299w&#257n of the state. In 1778, he was deputed by the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 to assist R&#257j&#257 Gajpat Si&#7749gh of J&#299nd against Rah&#299m Kh&#257n of H&#257&#7749s&#299, who had attacked his territory. Rah&#299m Kh&#257n was slain in the battle that ensued and the D&#299w&#257n obtained much booty in horses, elephants and arms. He then proceeded to occupy important places such as H&#257&#7749s&#299, Hiss&#257r, Rohtak, Tosham, Meham and Goh&#257&#7751&#257, all in present-day Hary&#257&#7751&#257 state.

When, on R&#257j&#257 Amar Si&#7749gh's death in 1782, S&#257hib Si&#7749gh ascended the throne of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257, he was only eight. Owing to the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257's minority, the affairs of the state fell into disorder. R&#257&#7751&#299 Hukm&#257 , grandmother of the minor Mah&#257r&#257j&#257, had N&#257n&#363 Mall appointed as mad&#257r-ul-mah&#257m or the prime minister of the state. R&#257mj&#299 D&#257s Sayy&#257h, the author of the Tar&#299kh-i-Sun&#257m compares D&#299w&#257n N&#257n&#363 Mall with Bairam Kh&#257n, the tutor of Akbar the Great, who administered the kingdom during the latter's minority. D&#299w&#257n N&#257n&#363 M&#257ll put down a large number of revolts against the state and established peace and order. But with the death of R&#257&#7751&#299 Hukm&#257, who was his staunchest supporter, began his downfall. He had incurred the hostility of other members of the royal family and of the courtiers by his arrogant manner. He was eventually dismissed from service, along with his sons and relatives. When he failed to regain his position, he revolted and, with the help of Naw&#257b 'At&#257 Ull&#257h of M&#257lerko&#7789l&#257, led an attack against the state forces, but was defeated.

         N&#257n&#363 M&#257ll died at Malerko&#7789l&#257 on 21 November 1791.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Griffin, Lepel, The Rajas of the Punjab [Reprint].
