He lost his father, Ga&#7749g&#257 Si&#7749gh, in his early childhood and was brought up by an elder brother. He was married at the age of fifteen and worked as a carpenter in his own village until he left for Basr&#257, in Iraq, in search of a better living. While he was in Basr&#257, he was deeply moved by events in the Punjab such as the Jalli&#257&#7749v&#257l&#257 B&#257gh tragedy and the Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib massacre. Resolved to dedicate himself to the cause of Gurdw&#257r&#257 reform, he returned to India and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for participating in Gur&#363 k&#257 B&#257gh agitation. The atrocity perpetrated on peaceful Ak&#257l&#299 volunteers had embittered his heart and he decided to renounce non-violence in favour of violence. He joined the radical Babar Ak&#257l&#299 Jath&#257 and encompassed the murder, on 17 April 1923, of S&#363bad&#257r Gend&#257 Si&#7749gh of his own village. The S&#363bad&#257r had incurred the displeasure of the B&#257b&#257r Ak&#257l&#299s by acting as an informer against the group and against the Ak&#257l&#299s of the area. Nand Si&#7749gh was arrested five days after the murder. He was awarded death sentence and was hanged, with Kishan Si&#7749gh Ga&#7771gajj, leader of the Babar Ak&#257l&#299 movement, on 27 February 1926.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Ghosh, Kali Charan,. The Roll of Honour : Anecdotes of Indian Martyrs.
