About the year 1685, he came to Anandpur, then the seat of Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh. He practised the manly arts and took part in Sikhs' battles with the surrounding hill chiefs and imperial troops. He was one of the five who offered their heads in response to Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh's call on the Bais&#257kh&#299 day of 1699 and earned the appellation of Pañj Pi&#257re. Initiated into the order of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257, Muhkam Chand received the common surname of Si&#7749gh and became Muhkam Si&#7749gh.
