Mohan Si&#7749gh, too, as he grew up, joined the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Ak&#257l&#299 Dal and slowly ascending the ladder became a member of Shiroma&#7751&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee in December 1954. He went to jail during the Punjabi S&#363b&#257 morch&#257 (agitation) of 1955 and was again elected a member of the Shiroman&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee in January 1960. In the internal conflict in the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Ak&#257l&#299 Dal leadership Jathed&#257r Mohan Si&#7749gh Tu&#7771 sided with Sant Fateh Si&#7749gh against Master T&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh. In the general elections in 1962 he, while yet in jail, was put up as an Ak&#257l&#299 candidate for the Punjab Legislative Assembly from the Tarn T&#257ran constituency against the Congress stalwart and chief minister Part&#257p Si&#7749gh Kairo&#7749. The sitting chief minister won the seat by a bare margin of 34 votes, which outcome was cavilled at by opposition parties. Mohan Si&#7749gh emerged from this election as one of the front rank jathed&#257rs (leaders) of the Sant Ak&#257l&#299 Dal. He was elected a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 1967 and again during the mid-term elections of 1969. After the death of Sant Fateh Si&#7749gh in 1972, Jathed&#257r Mohan Si&#7749gh Tu&#7771 was elected president of the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Ak&#257l&#299 Dal. In this capacity he successfully conducted the agitation against Hary&#257n&#257 government's unlawful pressure on Sikh landholders settled in that state. A second landmark was the peaceful agitation against the countrywide state of emergency declared by the Central Government headed by Prime Minister Indir&#257 G&#257ndh&#299. In March 1977, Jathed&#257r Tu&#7771 was elected to the Lok Sabh&#257, the lower house of Parliament.

         Jathed&#257r Mohan Si&#7749gh Tu&#7771 died on 30 July 1979.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

The Aj&#299t Jalandhar, 30 July 1984

Ashok, Shamsher Si&#7749gh, Shiroma&#7751&#299 Committee d&#257 Pañj&#257h S&#257l&#257 Itih&#257s .
