During his younger days, Ma&#7749gal Si&#7749gh remained in attendance on Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh who gave him <i>j&#257g&#299rs</i> in several villages. After his father's death, Ma&#7749gal Si&#7749gh was sent to Pesh&#257war in command of four hundred foot and one hundred and ten <i>sow&#257rs</i> of the old R&#257mga&#7771h&#299&#257 clan. There he served under Tej Si&#7749gh and Har&#299 Si&#7749gh Nalv&#257 and fought in the battle of Jamr&#363d in April 1837. In 1839, he was recalled and sent to the hill country between the Be&#257s and the Sutlej, and during the absence of Lahi&#7751&#257 Si&#7749gh Maj&#299&#7789h&#299&#257 in Pesh&#257war, he was placed in-charge of the hill forts. During the reign of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Sher Si&#7749gh, he was chiefly employed under Lahi&#7751&#257 Si&#7749gh in Suket, Ma&#7751&#7693&#299 and Kul&#363. He was one of the commanders sent to chastise Fateh <u>Kh</u>&#257n of Mi&#7789&#7789h&#257 &#7788iv&#257&#7751&#257 in 1844. On the retirement of Jodh Si&#7749gh M&#257n in 1862, Ma&#7749gal Si&#7749gh was appointed manager of the Golden Temple. In the same year, he was appointed an honorary magistrate of the city of Amritsar.
