According to Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh, <i>Sikh&#257&#7749 d&#299 Bhagat M&#257l&#257</i>, he once asked the Gur&#363, "There are some who perform <i>k&#299rtan</i> as a means to earn their living while there are others who earn their living through hard labour, share their victuals with others and also attend the holy assembly and recite hymns to please the Gur&#363. Pray enlighten us regarding their respective merit."
