Sad&#257 Kaur persuaded her father-in-law, Jai Si&#7749gh Kanhaiy&#257, after her husband had been killed in a show of arms with Mah&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh Sukkarchakk&#299&#257, to betroth her daughter to the son of the Sukkarchakk&#299&#257 chief. The marriage took place in 1796 with great eclat, but Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh failed to win the affection of Mahit&#257b Kaur for she could not forget the fact that her father had been killed by the father of her husband. She lived mostly with her mother at Ba&#7789&#257l&#257. This estrangement was complete after Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh took R&#257j Kaur in marriage. Mahit&#257b Kaur gave birth to three sons &#8212 &#298shar Si&#7749gh who died in infancy and the twins, Sher Si&#7749gh and T&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh.
