He along with his parents, Bh&#257&#299 Jha&#7751&#7693&#257 Si&#7749gh and M&#257&#299 Bh&#257go, migrated to Chakk No. 75 Lahuke in Lyallpur district when that area was colonized during the 1890's. He knew Urdu and Punjabi; he also learnt some <i>Mah&#257j&#257n&#299</i> (a script used traditionally by commercial classes) and became a postman. Later, he set up himself as a commission agent. In company with his friend Bh&#257&#299 Narai&#7751 Si&#7749gh, a pious Sikh, he had himself registered as a volunteer in the Gurdw&#257r&#257 Reform movement. A week before the Nank&#257&#7751&#257 happening, he donated his house to the village Gurdw&#257r&#257 and joined the <i>jath&#257</i> of Bh&#257&#299 &#298shar Si&#7749gh Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299.
