In his early youth M&#257gh Si&#7749gh had enlisted in the army and had served in the Pesh&#257war sector of the North-West Frontier Province for a few years. He had been admitted to the rites of the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 initiation during his army service, and had also learnt to read and write Punjabi before he left the army to resume his ancestral occupation, agriculture. He was about forty years old when the Jaito <i>morch&#257</i> (agitation) was launched by the Ak&#257l&#299s with the twin objects of the restoration of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ripudaman Si&#7749gh of N&#257bh&#257, who had earlier been forced to abdicate by the British, and to protest against the violation of the sanctity of Gurdw&#257r&#257 Ga&#7749gsar at Jaito by the state police.
