His original name was Lachhma&#7751. As he grew up, he enlisted in the army as a cook. There he underwent the rites of <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 initiation and received the new name of Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh. While in service, he learnt Gurmukh&#299 well enough to be able to read the Gur&#363 Granth S&#257hib. On his discharge from the army, Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh settled down as a Gurdw&#257r&#257 officiant at Chakk No. 83 &#7692all&#257 Na&#7749gal, in Shei<u>kh</u>&#363pur&#257 district. He was drawn into the Gurdw&#257r&#257 movement for the reform and management of Sikh shrines.
