Well versed in diplomacy, he accompanied Colonel Claude Wade on a political mission to Pesh&#257war in 1839. In 1840, Ka&#7749var Nau Nih&#257l Si&#7749gh conferred on him the title of R&#257i. After the death of Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Sher Si&#7749gh, he began exercising civil and criminal powers over territories under the protection of the Lahore Darb&#257r, and amassed great wealth. When R&#257j&#257 H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh became the prime minister, he grew jealous of R&#257i Kishan Chand's increasing influence and his pro-Gul&#257b Si&#7749gh leanings. As hostilities broke out between the British and the Sikhs in 1845, Kishan Chand left Ludhi&#257&#7751&#257 and crossed the Sutlej into the Punjab. He lost his j&#257g&#299rs when the Jalandhar Do&#257b was annexed by the British. He was one of the signatories to the treaty of Bharov&#257l on behalf of the minor Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Duleep Si&#7749gh and for some time attended on the British Resident at Lahore before being permitted to retire to Ba&#7789&#257l&#257.

        Kishan Chand died in 1873.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

S&#363r&#299, Sohan L&#257l, Umd&#257t-ut-Tw&#257r&#299kh, Lahore, 1885-89

Griffin, Lepel, and C.F.
