He passed his middle school examination in 1932. For religious instruction, he joined the <i>jath&#257</i> of Sant Gurbachan Si&#7749gh <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 Bhi&#7751&#7693r&#257&#7749v&#257le on 15 February 1939 and studied with him Sikh Scripture, philosophy, theology and history. In 1944 he set up a group of his own to preach <i>gurmat</i> (Sikh religious tenet). Simultaneously he started taking interest in politics and became general-secretary of the district Ak&#257l&#299 Jath&#257 of F&#299rozpur during 1954-56. During the illness of Sant Gurbachan Si&#7749gh <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 in 1956-58, Gi&#257n&#299 Kirp&#257l Si&#7749gh taught at the Bhi&#7751&#7693ar Kal&#257&#7749 seminary. On 2 April 1958 he was appointed <i>granth&#299</i> (scripture reader) in Harimandar S&#257hib, Amritsar. He was nominated to the religious tribunal which tried and punished Master T&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh, Sant Fateh Si&#7749gh and members of the central executive of the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Ak&#257l&#299 Dal in 1962 for a disciplinary lapse they were taxed with. During 1963-65 he served as acting <i>jathed&#257r</i> of Sr&#299 Ak&#257l Ta<u>kh</u>t. On 2 June 1973, he was appointed Head Granth&#299 of Sr&#299 Harimandar S&#257hib which position he held up to 16 April 1983. In 1980-81 he visited the United Kingdom on a preaching tour, and on the sudden demise of Gi&#257n&#299 Gurdi&#257l Si&#7749gh Ajnoh&#257, he took over as <i>jathed&#257r</i> of Sr&#299 Ak&#257l Ta<u>kh</u>t. Gi&#257n&#299 Kirp&#257l Si&#7749gh resigned office as Jathed&#257r of Sr&#299 Ak&#257l Ta<u>kh</u>t on 24 December 1986.</p> <p class="C1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Si&#7749gh S&#257hib Gi&#257n&#299 Kirp&#257l Si&#7749gh, well versed in Sikh lore, was a writer and researcher of repute. His <i>Sam Arth Kosh</i> is a dictionary of Punjabi synonyms. He also wrote a 6 volume commentary on Gi&#257n&#299 Gi&#257n Si&#7749gh's <i>Panth Prak&#257sh</i>, a history of the Sikhs in mixed Punjabi and Braj verse. His detailed account of Operation Blue Star (1984) was being serialized in the <i>Aj&#299t</i>, a Punjabi daily of Jalandhar, when he died suddently at his residence in Amritsar, on 26 July 1993.</p> </ol><p class="CONT">Major Gurmukh Si&#7749gh (Retd.)<br></p><BR> </font><img src="counter.aspx" width="1px" height="1px" alt=""></HTML></BODY>
