He learnt to read Gurmukh&#299 in the village <i>gurdw&#257r&#257</i> and received the rites of <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 initiation. He was one of the 15 Ak&#257l&#299 volunteers from his village who, joining the <i>jath&#257</i> of Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh of Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299, laid down their lives on 20 February 1921 in an effort to free Gurdw&#257r&#257 Janam Asth&#257n from the control of its dissolute custodian, Mahant Narai&#7751 D&#257s. <i>See</i> NANK&#256&#7750&#256 S&#256HIB MASSACRE.
