The inspiration came from &#7788ikk&#257 Ripudaman Si&#7749gh (1883-1943), heir apparent to the N&#257bh&#257 throne, who was a staunch advocate of the Si&#7749gh Sabh&#257 doctrine, and his tutor Bh&#257&#299 K&#257hn Si&#7749gh. A committee consisting of five members, Haz&#363r&#257 Si&#7749gh, Nih&#257l Si&#7749gh, Bed&#299 Hukam Si&#7749gh, Raghb&#299r Si&#7749gh and M&#299h&#257&#7749 Si&#7749gh, was constituted the same day to administer the D&#299w&#257n. To help the committee, So&#7693h&#299 H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh was nominated secretary and Gurdi&#257l Si&#7749gh assistant secretary. Among the aims of the D&#299w&#257n were the propagation of the Sikh faith and the Sikh way of life and customs, spread of education among the Sikhs, uplift of women so as to bring them on equal footing with men, and better management of Sikh religious places. The D&#299w&#257n remained fairly active in its appointed sphere of work till 1911, but after that it gradually lapsed into oblivion owing mainly to the waning interest on the part of Ripudaman Si&#7749gh who became the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 of N&#257bh&#257 after the death on 25 December 1911 of his father, Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Sir H&#299r&#257 Si&#7749gh.

Shamsher Si&#7749gh Ashok
