After receiving elementary education in his village, he was admitted to <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 Collegiate School, Amritsar, but owing to his father's death in 1907, he left off without taking the matriculation examination and joined the Nirmal&#257 &#7692er&#257 at &#7788hikr&#299v&#257l&#257, in the former princely state of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257, to learn Sanskrit from Pa&#7751&#7693it Basant Si&#7749gh. Besides Sanskrit, he was nurtured at the &#7692er&#257 in Sikh scriptures and he passed out as a learned scholar and practised debater. He worked for a time as a teacher in <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 Prach&#257rak Vidy&#257l&#257, Tarn T&#257ran. Later, when Sikh Missionary College was opened at Amritsar in 1923, Pa&#7751&#7693it Kart&#257r Si&#7749gh joined the faculty as a lecturer. Returning to his native village, D&#257kh&#257, he took to preaching, travelling extensively in the Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. In 1933-38 he taught at Gurmat Updeshak College, Damdam&#257 S&#257hib, Talva&#7751&#7693&#299 S&#257bo in Ba&#7789hi&#7751&#7693&#257 district, also known as Gur&#363 K&#257sh&#299. There he brought out a missionary journal, <i>Gur&#363 K&#257sh&#299 Pattar</i>, which was later shifted to Ludhi&#257&#7751&#257 and ultimately to D&#257kh&#257 itself. During 1938-39, Pa&#7751&#7693it Kart&#257r Si&#7749gh, accompanied by Gi&#257n&#299 Gurcharan Si&#7749gh of Muktsar, took out a tour to Singapore and Malaya at the invitation of the Sikhs living in those countries. On return from there, he served for some time as a lecturer in divinity at Gur&#363 Hargobind <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 College, Gur&#363sar Sadh&#257r, l0 km south of D&#257kh&#257. He also served in the Punjab Languages Department at Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257 from 1951-53. He died of heart attack on 25 November 1958 at Qil&#257 R&#257ipur, a village 18 km south of Ludhi&#257&#7751&#257.</p> <p class="C1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pa&#7751&#7693it Kart&#257r Si&#7749gh D&#257kh&#257 was a prolific writer. His published works included books on linguistics, philosophy, prosody, grammar, commentaries on sacred texts, some of the titles being <i>Hind&#299 ate Gurmukh&#299 Lip&#299 te Vich&#257r</i> (1931), <i>Gurmukh&#299 ate Hind&#299 d&#257 &#7788&#257kr&#257</i> (1949), <i>Ny&#257i Paribh&#257sh&#257</i> (1929), <i>Gur&#363 K&#257vya Darshan Arth&#257t Pi&#7749gal</i> (1913), <i>Ala&#7749k&#257r Nir&#7751aya</i> (n.d.), <i>Nav&#299n Punjabi Pi&#7749gal</i> (n.d.), <i>Sr&#299 Gur&#363 Vyakara&#7751 Pañch&#257i&#7751</i> (1945), <i>M&#257lve d&#257 Political ltih&#257s</i> (n.d.) <i>Sr&#299 Japu N&#299s&#257n</i> (1951), <i>Das Dohare te V&#299h Savaiyye Sa&#7789&#299k</i> (n.d.), <i>Gur&#363 Pad Nir&#7751aya</i> (n.d.), <i>Bhagaut&#299 Ma&#7751&#7693an</i> (1963), and two pamphlets on R&#257gm&#257l&#257 controversy (1946).
