The Gur&#363 once sent him to the hill country, present-day Him&#257chal Pradesh, to raise funds and bring timber for the holy Harimandar, then being built at Amritsar. When Kali&#257&#7751&#257 arrived at Ma&#7751&#7693&#299, the capital of a hill state of the same name, he found that it was Janam A&#7779&#7789am&#299, the birth anniversary of Lord K&#7771&#7779&#7751a, prolcaimed by the ruler, R&#257j&#257 Har&#299 Sen, to be observed by the entire population as a day of fasting. Bh&#257&#299 Kali&#257&#7751&#257 and the Sikhs accompanying him did not consider themselves bound by the prince's fiat in a purely religious matter and did not observe the fast. He was pulled up by the R&#257j&#257 for the "sacrilege," but he argued against compulsion in matters of faith so convincingly that R&#257j&#257 Har&#299 Sen became interested to know more about the Sikhs and their Gur&#363. He not only helped Bh&#257&#299 Kali&#257&#7751&#257 with whatever he needed, but also accompanied him back to Amritsar. He paid obeisance to Gur&#363 Arjan and received instruction at his hands.

Bh&#257&#299 Kali&#257&#7751&#257, according to Bh&#257&#299 Santokh Si&#7749gh, Sr&#299 Gur Prat&#257p S&#363raj Granth, was among those who were specially blessed by Gur&#363 Arjan for their dedication and piety and who enjoyed a place of honour in his retinue.
