His father and grandfather had also served under Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Ra&#7751j&#299t Si&#7749gh. J&#299van Si&#7749gh's contingent, consisting of sixty-five horse, five <i>zamb&#363r&#257s</i> or camel-swivels, and a kettledrum, was known all along the north-western frontier for its swift movement. He served at Bann&#363, &#7788onk, Mi&#7789&#7789h&#257 &#7788iw&#257&#7751&#257, Pesh&#257war and Jamr&#363d. For about eight years, he was stationed at &#7692er&#257 Ism&#257'&#299l <u>Kh</u>&#257n where he had to face the hostility of the border tribes. He took part in the two Anglo-Sikh wars.
