The betrothal had taken place in 1673. The father-in-law had desired that the bridegroom should come at the head of a marriage party to Lahore where the ceremony should be performed with due dignity. But the fateful events leading to the martyrdom of Gur&#363 Tegh Bah&#257dur intervened, and in the changed circumstances it was not possible for the young Gur&#363 to go to Lahore. Therefore, a temporary encampment was raised near the village of Basantga&#7771h, 10 km north of Anandpur, and named Gur&#363 k&#257 Lahore where the nuptials were held on 23 H&#257&#7771 1734 Bk/21 June 1677. Three sons were born to M&#257t&#257 J&#299toj&#299 -- Jujh&#257r Si&#7749gh (14 March 1691), Zor&#257war Si&#7749gh (17 November 1696) and Fateh Si&#7749gh (25 February 1699). As Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh was preparing amrit for initiating the Kh&#257ls&#257, on 30 March 1699, stirring clean water in an iron bowl with a kha&#7751&#7693&#257 or double-edged sword, M&#257t&#257 J&#299toj&#299, as the tradition goes, came with sugar crystals which were dropped into the vessel at the Gur&#363's bidding. Sweetness was thus added to the alchemy of steel. M&#257t&#257 J&#299toj&#299 died at Anandpur on 5 December 1700. The cremation took place at Agampur&#257, near the Holga&#7771h Fort. A memorial shrine now stands upon the spot.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Chhibbar, Kesar Si&#7749gh, Bans&#257val&#299n&#257m&#257 Das&#257&#7749 P&#257tsh&#257h&#299&#257&#7749 K&#257.
