His elder brother Gujjar Si&#7749gh had registered himself as a volunteer for the liberation of holy shrines at Nank&#257&#7751&#257 S&#257hib, but when the call came on 19 February 1920, Javand Si&#7749gh insisted that he take his brother's place in the <i>jath&#257</i> led by Bh&#257&#299 Lachhma&#7751 Si&#7749gh Dh&#257rov&#257l&#299 which was allowed.
